In India’s match against Afghanistan in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup on Wednesday (October 11) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Jasprit Bumrah picked up the first Afghanistan wicket after they chose to bat first. After Ibrahim Zadran edged the ball to keeper, KL Rahul, Bumrah pulled out a famous footballer’s celebration. 

Jasprit Bumrah pointed his finger to his temple to celebrate. This is a celebration often done by footballer, Marcus Rashford, who plays for Manchester United. Burmah is a Manchester United fan and has also visited the club’s home ground, Old Trafford, in 2021.

The influence of football in the world of cricket is pretty evident. Chris Gayle, along with Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Ashok Dinda regularly did Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic “Siu” celebration. KL Rahul did Memphis Depay and Ayoze Perez’s celebration, where he covered both his ears with his index fingers. Suryakumar Yadav did Ronaldo’s “calma” celebration after winning Mumbai Indians a match in the 2020 IPL, while Umesh Yadav copied Kylian Mbappe’s celebration.

Fans claim Jasprit Bumrah did the celebration better than Marcus Rashford

As Jasprit Bumrah pulled off Rashford’s celebration, both cricket and football fans were quick to comment on his celebration. Many fans joked on how Bumrah did it better than the English footballer. Many also compared the celebration with Jethalal, a beloved character from the Indian television show ‘Tarak Mehta ka ultah chasma.’

Some called the celebration cringe, while others called Rashford’s influence unmatched. Many netizens who support the rivals of Manchester United asked why Bumrah would copy a flop celebration as well, calling it the lowest point of his career.

Afghanistan have scored 161 runs in 32 overs. They lost 3 wickets in the first 13 overs, but since then batters Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai have built a 98 run partnership against a great Indian bowling attack. The Indian bowlers have struggled to break the partnership, as the duo continue to score runs.
