England was helpless in front of spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the first ODI on Tuesday, July 10 at London’s Kennington Oval. They have taken a lead 1-0 in the three-match ODI series after defeating the host by 10 wickets.

Bumrah was the reason behind the collapse of English top-order. And England wanted to score some quick runs to at least put up a fighting total. But only England captain Jos Buttler could score 30 runs off 32. Other batsmen couldn’t reach even 25 runs. Bumrah scalped six wickets and conceded just 19 runs with three maiden overs while Mohammed Shami scalped three wickets and this also made him the fastest Indian bowler to reach 150 ODI wickets. At the end, they could pile up a mere 110 runs, which India answered comfortably.

India opening batsmen Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were the ones to bat till the end. Rohit scored a brilliant 76 runs off 58 balls with seven boundaries and five sixes while Dhawan, who came back to international cricket after a long time, scored 31 runs off 54 balls with four boundaries. These two easily reached the target and gave India 1-0 lead.

“When there’s swing and seam movement, it is very exciting in white-ball cricket to get that opportunity because you have to be defensive with the kind of pitches we usually get,” said Bumrah at the post-match presentation.

“When I bowled the first ball, I found some swing and we tried to exploit that. When it doesn’t swing, I have to pull my lengths back. When the ball is doing something you don’t have to try a lot. When the wicket is flat your accuracy is tested. It is a good place to be when the ball is swinging,” he added.
