India speedster Jasprit Bumrah, who has not played a game since September last year, has undergone back surgery in New Zealand. Reports claim that he is expected to stay in New Zealand till the end of March.

If everything goes well, then Bumrah will be seen following the roadmap of his return prepared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) medical staff. He can be seen resuming his training and bowling by August to prepare him for the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be played in India in October-November.

The BCCI wants Bumrah’s services for the ODI World Cup and that is why the medical staff at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru decided to do surgery in coordination with Bumrah.

Last September, he pulled himself out of the white-ball series against South Africa due to a stress fracture in his lower back. Earlier this year, he was the last addition to the squad list for the series against Sri Lanka. The 29-year-old ended up missing the entire series due to the niggles he experienced in his back. He was performing higher workloads during a fitness drill in Mumbai when he felt the discomfort.

He is also not a part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which India have retained 2-1. Due to his surgery, he will miss the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 for the Mumbai Indians as well as the ICC World Test Championship Final at The Oval from June 7 if India become the second finalist after Australia.

The injury he suffered last August also ruled him out of the Asia Cup as well as the ICC T20 World Cup last year in Australia. Though at first, his injury didn’t look too serious, he played a few games to make a comeback. He featured in two T20Is of the Australia series on September 23 and 25 but failed to take part in the South Africa series. Scans revealed later that the injury was serious. Now the BCCI is not rushing him to take part in India matches for the upcoming important tournaments.
