Jasprit Bumrah is returning to International cricket after 11 months today. He will captain India in the 3 match T20I series in their tour of Ireland. Bumrah last played for India in a T20I against Australia in September 2022.
Bumrah has been out due to a stress fracture on his lower back since 2022, and had been undergoing a recovery plan for over 11 months. He started bowling with full intensity in July and also took part in match simulations while in the National Cricket Academy.
In a press conference ahead of the 1st T20I, Bumrah talked about how he prepared for the upcoming ODI Asia Cup and World Cup. He knew that he won’t play any Test Cricket till the ODI World Cup, so the NCA made him prepare for ODI’s during his rehab.
Bumrah said that he bowled 10, 12 even 15 overs per day. They didn’t prepare him for T20Is but always kept the World Cup as the main goal. “In my rehab as well, I was not preparing for a T20 game. I was always preparing for the World Cup competition,” said Bumrah during the pre-match press conference.
Interactions with teammates in the NCA kept Jasprit Bumrah in good spirits

Although Bumrah spent a majority of the previous 11 months in the NCA, he never thought of the period in a negative way, looking only at the positive. He said he did miss playing, but after interacting with other recovering players in the NCA, he realised that he should respect the time needed to recover from injuries and looked at the period as an off season.
Bumrah has 128 Test wickets in 30 tests, 121 ODI wickets in 72 ODIs and 70 wickets in 60 T20Is. He is regarded as one of the best bowlers of his generation and is India’s first choice pacer whenever he’s fully fit.
Bumrah has had issues with his back since 2019. After India’s tour of West Indies, he had a stress fracture on his lower back which made him unavailable for over 5 months. Most of these injuries are due to this unorthodox bowling action that puts a lot of stress on his back.
