On the night of 14th November, an event was held in the Niranjan Shah Stadium where the Saurashtra Cricket Association felicitated Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja. BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, was also at the event and confirmed who would captain the Indian team in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Shah spoke to the audience, which included the Indian team and journalists. He confirmed that Rohit Sharma will be captaining the Indian side in the 2024 T20 World Cup. He also confirmed that Hardik Pandya will be standing as vice-captain of the Indian side.
At this point in time, Rohit is an all-format captain. It is a collective decision, and the selectors are fully aligned on the matter. Hardik Pandya will retain his position as vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. Consider if Hardik gets injured, as he did in the previous World Cup. In such a scenario, who should we entrust with the leadership responsibility?Jay Shah said
Sharma has missed over 13 months of T20I cricket before playing the Afghanistan series in January 2024. Although he was dismissed for ducks in the first two matches, he ended the series with a century.
Pandya used to captain the T20I Indian side in Sharma’s absence. He has been out due to injury since the 2023 ODI World Cup, and has missed the T20I series against Australia and the South Africa tour as well.
Jay Shah assures India will win the 2024 T20 World Cup
Finishing the 2023 ODI World Cup as runners-up, Jay Shah has assured fans India will be the eventual champions of the 2024 T20 World Cup. He also said this feat will only happen under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
I have not made any comments about the 2023 World Cup, in which we lost the final in Ahmedabad. However, I can assure you that India will clinch the T20 World Cup in Barbados on June 29 under Rohit Sharma's captaincy.Jay Shah said
India will be playing the third Test match of the five-match series in Rajkot on 15th February. The side is still unsure of the availability of Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul, who were injured in the first Test. Sarfaraz Khan will most probably make his Test debut, with Shreyas Iyer dropped from the squad.
