England’s Joe Root is regarded as one of the best slip fielders in world cricket at the moment and he keeps on proving why. The latest of Root’s brilliance in slip fielding came during the fifth Ashes Test when the former England captain held on to a tough catch to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne while fielding in the first slip.
Joe Root pulled off a one-handed catch and that too with his left hand on Mark Wood’s bowling to send Labuschagne packing. This catch from Root helped England break a 42-run partnership between Usman Khawaja and Labuschagne.
The breakthrough was a crucial one for England considering their low score in the first inning. Mark Wood was at it again as the pacer induced an outside edge from Labuschange. The rest of the job was done by Root who showed quick reflexes to stick out his left hand and complete a sensational catch.
England pierce through Australia’s batting lineup

After this Marnus Lanuschagne dismissal, England tightened the grip as the hosts got three more wickets in no time. While Stuart Broad struck twice in quick succession to get rid of Usman Khawaja and Travis Head, James Anderson sent Mitchell Marsh packing. However, Steven Smith is still out there in the middle, holding his fort.
Although England did not score enough in their first inning, getting bowled out for 283, their bowlers have kept them in the game. Australia still trail by over 100 runs with five wickets lost. England will be hoping to stop the Aussies before they cross England’s first-inning total. Ben Stokes and Co. have a chance to level the series if they win the fifth Ashes Test. However, it won’t be easy considering how Australia have played in this series so far.
