Both Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow slammed tons to lead England’s mammoth chase of 378 against India on Day 5 at Edgbaston of the rescheduled fifth Test. At stumps on Day 4, England’s score read 259/3 with both these players at the crease, needing only 119 runs on Day 5 to win the fifth Test of the Pataudi Trophy.
The fifth Test started with England opting to bowl first because of the overcast weather. India started slow by losing five wickets for 98 runs before Rishabh Pant unleashed as assault on the English bowlers. He scored an impressive 146 runs off just 111 balls to revive India’s innings.
The next day saw the ‘sword’ celebration of Ravindra Jadeja when he slammed his third Test ton. After his dismissal, Jasprit Bumrah slammed 36 runs off just 19 balls by creating a world record of scoring 29 runs in an over of Stuart Broad by breaking legendary cricketer Brian Lara’s record of 28 runs in an over. Stuart Broad also created an unwanted word record by conceding 35 runs in over.
