English players found it painful to play at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium against South Africa due to the hot and humid climate. Even South Africa batter Heinrich Klaasen, who slammed his breathtaking century was seen struggling throughout his 109-run innings.

England’s Joe Root, before the match against Sri Lanka, complained about the weather in Mumbai. He said although he has played in hotter conditions, Mumbai’s weather was a different one.

I’ve not played in anything like that before. I’ve obviously played in hotter conditions, and probably more humid conditions. But it just felt like you couldn’t get your breath. It was like you were eating the air. It was unique,” Root was quoted as saying by MyKhel. He then recalled Klaasen’s struggles while scoring his runs.

Root said that as soon as the players started fielding, their jerseys were soaking wet. He recalled the noises Adil Rashid was making and was struggling to breathe while bowling. Though Root complained about the weather, he understood what it means to play in India at this time of the year. Notably, England lost that match against South Africa after failing to chase away the 400-run target, getting bundled out for just 170 runs.

Root would then score another half-century (82), helping his team pull off the victory against Bangladesh. However, his bat did not talk much in the next two matches, against Afghanistan (11) and South Africa (two runs). He will be next seen on the field when England will lock horns with Sri Lanka on Thursday (October 26).
