Pictures and videos are going viral on social media about batters leaving the crease early before the bowler delivers the ball. To avoid this, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips has invented a new style to refrain from leaving the crease early.

Phillips was the hero when the Kiwis locked horns with Sri Lanka on Saturday [October 29/] at the SCG in Sydney. He smashed 104 runs off just 64 balls to help his team post 167/7. Spearhead Trent Boult then did the rest of the job by scalping four wickets and guiding his team to a 65-run victory. But apart from these two Kiwis, Phillips’ crouch position has been making headlines.

Check the video below:

He did this to avoid the “Spirit of Cricket” debate. It all began when Deepti Sharma mankaded Charlie Dean during India’s tour of England. Dean was the only hope for the English side to avoid a whitewash, but Deepti’s run-out ended England’s hopes. And at the Home of Cricket, Harmanpreet Kaur-led India clean-swept the host by 3-0.

Now the run-out triggered the debate of whether mankading is in the “Spirit of Cricket”? According to the MCC, it is. But fans, cricket pundits, and even former and past cricketers have polarized opinions on it. Some say it’s unfair, while others say leaving the crease early, is unfair. Nevertheless, the debate surrounding one of the most controversial rules of this sport is likely to stop.

Coming back to Glenn Phillips, his knock ended when Lahiru Kumara dismissed him in the final over. In that same over, fans saw him crouching, while his bat was touching the crease. It certainly has helped him steal quick singles while maintaining good balance and momentum.

He saved the Kiwis from a precarious situation when the Blackcaps’ score read 15/3. Later, Trent Boult scalped four wickets and conceded just 13 runs. New Zealand is all set to get their green card to the semi-finals.

Phillips also became the second-highest scorer from the Kiwi side in the T20 World Cups. He also achieved a massive record; as a No.4 batter, he has scored the most runs in the history of T20 World Cups.
