KL Rahul came into bat when India were 92/4. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer had built a crucial partnership in the first session after the top order collapsed, but it was broken thanks to a beautiful ball by Kagiso Rabada. Rahul, who was batting at number six after nine years, came in to bat.

Just 24 balls after Iyer’s wicket, Rabada struck again as he got Kohli to edge one to the keeper. With India 107/5, Rahul had the tough job to bat with the tailenders. India lost R Ashwin just four overs later, with Rabada bowling an unplayable delivery to the off-spinner.

Batting with Shardul Thakur, the duo managed to build a partnership of 43, with Rahul conserving his wickets. Just after Rabada hit his elbow, Thakur threw his wicket away by hitting the ball straight to the man at cover.

Now with Jasprit Bumrah, the wicketkeeper took on the role of the aggressor. In his 24 run partnership with Bumrah, he scored 24. After Bumrah was bowled by Marco Jansen, Rahul let loose and started attacking the Proteas bowlers. When Bumrah departed, he was 53 off 88, but in his next 49 balls he scored 48, reaching his 8th century, exactly 2 years after his previous century in the same stadium. His glorious innings finally ended after he was bowled by Nandre Burger.

He had hit 14 boundaries and 4 sixes, with his final six getting him to his century. One of the highlights from his innings was when he stole a single. Prasidh Krishna, who was the final man, had left the ball as it went down the legside. The two just snuck a single, and Rahul completed his century.

This is now KL Rahul’s 7th overseas ton, with only one coming at home against England in 2016. India set up a total of 245, with Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram now coming in. Bumrah and Siraj troubled the openers, before Siraj got Markram.
