In a recent Lanka Premier League 2023 match between Galle Titans and Dambulla Aura, Kusal Mendis‘ extraordinary wicketkeeping skills recalled memories of former Indian captain MS Dhoni‘s brilliance behind the wickets. Mendis, who is the wicket-keeper for Dambulla Aura, showcased reflexes comparable to Dhoni’s lightning-fast glove work during the game.

Lahiru Samarakoon, a batsman for the Galle Titans, was run out by Mendis in a crucial moment of the match. Despite a slightly wayward throw by the fielder Sadeera Samarawickrama, Mendis managed to collect the ball and performed an underarm throw that hit the stumps with perfection.

This brought back memories of Dhoni’s alike feat in 2016, in which he ran out New Zealand‘s Ross Taylor without even looking at the stumps. Mendis’s skills are not limited to this run-out only, as he contributed to a total of three dismissals – one stumping and two run-outs. His ability behind the wickets was pivotal in restricting Galle Titans to a moderate total of 133/9 in 20 overs.

This runout from Kusal Medis reminded fans of the infamous runout where MS Dhoni caught New Zealand’s Ross Taylor short of the crease and dislodged the bails without even looking at them. However, a few fans also felt that it should not be compared to Dhoni’s runout as the Indian wicketkeeper had a blind view of the wicket.

Check out some of the reactions.

Anyway, this runout had a positive impact, and that is what matters for Mendis. Dambulla Aura’s search was efficiently orchestrated, as they easily managed to achieve the target in just 17.4 overs and secured a seven-wicket win. Mendis, who opened for the Dambulla, showcased his batting by scoring 18 runs off 24 deliveries, including a well-executed boundary.

Meanwhile, Avishka Fernando was the real star for Dambulla as the opening batter scored a 49-ball 70* and saw his side home. Sadeera Samarawickrama also chipped in with an 18-ball 25.
