A viral infection has ruled wicket-keeper batter Litton Das out of Bangladesh’s 2023 Asia Cup campaign, a significant setback for Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) postponed the final decision on Litton’s fitness amid initial optimism that he would recover in time for the tournament. Bangladesh’s first match against Sri Lanka is scheduled for August 31 at the Pallekele International Stadium, so the team made a prudent decision to look for a replacement.
Anamul Haque, an experienced opener, was selected as Litton’s replacement. Haque brings a wealth of experience to the team, having played 41 ODIs for Bangladesh and amassed 1254 runs at an average of 30.54 and a strike rate of 74. His last international appearance came in December 2022 against India.
This setback comes on top of Tamim Iqbal‘s absence from the Bangladesh team. Tanzid Tamim, a promising prodigy, is another option in the top order. As of the start of 2022, Litton is Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in ODIs, having scored 878 runs in 25 innings at an impressive average of 41.
Eager to win their first Asia Cup, Bangladesh arrived in Sri Lanka on August 27 in an attempt to do so. They have been drawn in Group B and will open their campaign on August 31 in Pallekele against Sri Lanka before facing Afghanistan on September 3 in Lahore. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Anamul Haque, who takes on a key role and looks to leave his mark in this prestigious competition.
