“In search of gold we lost diamond”- Twitterati salutes lone warrior and unlucky Shikhar Dhawan as he rescues Punjab Kings with clutch knock

It was certainly a one-man show for the Punjab Kings despite Hyderabad's getting the upper hand right from the get-go.

After watching Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Rinku Singh’s nail-biting show with the bat to snatch victory from Gujarat Titans (GT) during the first match of Sunday, Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shikhar Dhawan stunned everyone with his clutch innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 9, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. But the 37-year-old fell short of just one run to score his third century in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Dhawan was a lone warrior. PBKS bowlers should do something to avoid Dhawan’s innings going in vain. The Punjab skipper, saved his wicket when at one point, his team was tethering at 88/9, and reaching the three-figure mark looked distant.

Three Punjab batters were dismissed for ducks, and two departed after scoring just one run. Other than Dhawan, only Sam Curran could reach the double-figure mark (22 off 15 balls).

Mayank Markande ran through Punjab’s batting lineup. He dismissed the likes of Sam Curran, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Chahar, and Natha Ellis. Though Markande completed his four-wicket haul, it was Marco Jansen who put Punjab Kings under pressure at first.

After Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave the first breakthrough by dismissing Prabhsimran Singh for a golden duck, Jansen bagged two wickets quickly, of Matthew Short and Jitesh Sharma. Then Umran Malik took care of the middle-order batters, by getting rid of Sikandar Raza and Harpreet Brar.

But it was not easy for the SRH bowlers to get rid of Dhawan. PBKS was under great pressure but still, Dhawan slammed 12 boundaries and five maximums and fell short of just one run to smack his century. He batted at a strike rate of 150, scoring 99* runs from 66 balls.

It was certainly a one-man show for the Punjab Kings despite Hyderabad’s getting the upper hand right from the get-go. When everyone fumbled, the ‘Gabbar’ roared. In the three matches that Punjab has played so far, Dhawan scored 40 off 29, 86 off 56, and now this 99* off 66; the skipper is always leading from the front. This was his 49th half-century in the IPL.
