Former Australia Head Coach Justin Langer has been roped in by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of IPL 2024. Langer replaces Andy Flower who served as the Head Coach for two seasons with Gautam Gambhir playing the role of the mentor.
“Lucknow Super Giants have appointed legendary Former Australian cricket team coach and batsman Justin Langer as their team head coach. As the two-year contract of Andy Flower comes to an end, Lucknow Super Giants thanks Andy Flower for his contribution,” said LSG in a statement on Friday.
Langer comes into the role with loads of experience and a great portfolio. The 52-year-old served as Australia’s head coach for over three years and won a handful of titles. While Australia whitewashed England 4-0 in Ashes under Langer, the Kangaroos also won their maiden T20 World Cup title under the experienced coach. Langer also has experience coaching a T20 franchise. In fact, Perth Scorchers won three BBL titles under him.
The Australian rejoiced on this special occasion as Langer expressed his excitement for the job ahead. “Lucknow Super Giants are on the journey of building a great story in the IPL. We all have a role to play in that journey and I am excited to be a part of the team moving forward,” said the 52-year-old.

Gautam Gambhir wanted Justin Langer as Head Coach
While Justin Langer has replaced Andy Flower as LSG Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir has kept his job as the team’s Director of Cricket. In fact, as reports have claimed it was Gambhir who recommended Langer’s name for the position. The two individuals share a great bond that dates back to Gambhir’s playing days.
Gautam Gambhir sought Langer’s help when the Indian cricketer was playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. Langer was impressed with Gambhir’s attitude and eagerness to learn despite a handful of achievements- two IPL titles and a World Cup under his belt.
Now, it will be interesting to see how the two form a partnership as support staff members and lead LSG to their maiden title. The Lucknow-based franchise has been impressive in the two editions they have played, making it to the playoffs in both seasons.
