On Sunday, Madhya Pradesh defeated the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai Indians by six wickets at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Not many knew about this player but MP’s Rajat Patidar smashed the winning runs to take his team to its maiden title. He played a knock of 30 runs off 37 balls.

On Day 5, that is today, Mumbai resumed from their overnight score of 113/2. But they couldn’t able to score much as Gaurav Yadav’s gave MP a much needed breakthrough in the early overs. Apart from Suved Parker’s 51 runs, no Mumbai batters could score a half-century.

Sarfaraz Khan could score 45 runs and was left to build a partnership with tailenders but the pressure of scoring quick run failed him and he got caught at deep midwicket when he had gone for a maximum. At the end, Mumbai could score only 107.

Madhya Pradesh responded by losing the wicket of Yash Dubey, who had also scored a century in the first innings. He got dismissed for only one run. Himanshu Mishra scored 37 runs and stitched a 52-run stand with Shubham Sharma, who had scored 30 runs. But Shams Mulani gave the crucial breakthrough for Mumbai.

Parth Sahani also walked back to the dugout early before Rajat Patidar held the fort for Madhya Pradesh and took the team eventually to a maiden title.

“Every trophy gives satisfaction but this one is special. I couldn’t do it as an MP captain years back (23 years). All these years, I have always felt that I had left something back over here. That’s the reason I am a bit more excited and emotional about it,” a visibly exhausted Madhya Pradesh head-coach Chandrakant Pandit.
