“Don’t try to be a hero,” Makhaya Ntini warns Jasprit Bumrah

In an interview on Boria Majumdar’s show, Backstage with Boria, Makhaya Ntini spoke about Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah has just arrived from a long term injury which had him out for 11 months. Ntini had some advice to give the Indian pacer.

Regarding Bumrah, Ntini said Bumrah needs to play safe and not be too harsh on his body right away in the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup. Ntini said “from my point of view, as a player coming out from the injury, all you need to do is, you need to use your brain, use your experience. Don’t try to be a hero from day one; you might go back to your injury.”

Ntini called Bumrah one of the best in the world and should take time to reach back to his best physical condition. Ntini also said he shouldn’t look at the injuries as they could hamper him. Bumrah should only look forward and be his best in the finals.

Bumrah just had his comeback in the recent T20I series against Ireland. He was captaining the side and had picked up 4 wickets in 2 matches. Bumrah said while he was in rehab, he was always preparing for the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2012 World Cup.

In the past, India was never known for its pacers. It used to be the land of spinners, with many spinners being a part of India’s highest wicket taking list. But in the past few years, the pace bowling talent in India has grown.

In the past few years, pacers had taken the driving seat under Kohli’s captaincy in both Tests and Limited Overs cricket. Pacers like Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were consistently performing for India. These pacers were essential in winnig many away tests.

Young pacers like Shivam Mavi, Mohsin Khan, Umran Malik, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan and Arshdeep Singh had made their names with impressive performances in the domestic circuit, IPL and International cricket as well.

Looking at these talents, Ntini had nothing but praise. He said times had changed and the pacers from India could genuinely be the best in the world.
