Matthew Hayden has had the privilege of playing under some of the greatest captains the world has ever seen. He was captained by Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Rickey Ponting for Australia. When it came to the IPL, he was captained by none other than MS Dhoni.
Hayden was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings in the first IPL auction for $375,000 and played from 2008 till 2010. In 2009, he was the highest run scorer of the tournament as well, with 572 runs. Hayden was a part of CSK’s 2010 IPL winning team as well. Recently he took part in “25 Questions,” a show in which ESPNcricinfo asks former cricketers 25 questions.
When asked what irritates Dhoni the most, Hayden recounted his time in the IPL. He stated that Dhoni did not show his emotions much often, but used to get annoyed with poor fielding efforts by his team.
MS Dhoni is pretty unflappable it must be said but if you really wanna give him the shivers, just have a slack fielding effort. Don't contribute in the field and that's one of the few times you would look at him and go 'ooh that's not gonna be good'.Matthew Hayden told ESPNcricinfo
Hayden currently works as a TV presenter for various media houses. He was a part of Cricket Australia in an administrative role for some years and was Pakistan’s batting coach in the 2021 ICC T20I World Cup. MS Dhoni has retired from International cricket, but still plays in the IPL.
Matthew Hayden calls Harbhajan Singh the most entertaining sledger
When asked who was the most entertaining sledger he had faced, Matthew Hayden said it was Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. He said the battles the two shared on field were the most entertaining and beautiful for him.
Hayden revealed that the toughest bowler he faced was Curtly Ambrose, how he would replace 9 players in the current Australian team with players from his generation and how he believed MS Dhoni was slower than Mike Hussey. He said the best Test series he played was the 2005 Ashes, where Australia lost 2-1 to England. For the last question, he revealed he never watches his batting highlights on Youtube.
