WATCH: Was Matthew Wade guilty of obstructing the field? Jos Buttler says ‘Bowlers asked if I wanted to apeal and I said no’
Matthew Wade and Mark Wood
England skipper Jos Buttler chose to avoid controversy in the opening match of Australia tour when Matthew Wade deliberately tried to obstruct the field. Buttler stated he might have appealed if it was a T20 World Cup match. That field obstructing event confused the 25,000 Optus Stadium fans but after Buttler’s statement, it got dampened.
Australia were at 175/5 when Matthew Wade top-edged a short delivery off Mark Woods. The ball hit into Wade’s helmet before ballooning into the air. Wood was running towards the batter to catch it. However, he couldn’t proceed when Wade stick out his arm out while trying to get back to the crease.

When England skipper Jos Buttler was asked about the incident, he said his focus was on the ball that’s why he didn’t see much what happened. When the bowlers asked him to appeal, he said no because it was English team’s first match in Australia.
“Maybe,” said Buttler in his post match press presentation when asked if he would have appealed for obstructing the field if it was a T20 World Cup match. “They asked if I wanted to appeal and I said no. I’ve only just got to Australia so I thought just carry on with the game.”
He added how he “didn’t really see what happened” because he was watching the ball closely. “It was hard because I didn’t know what I was appealing for,” he said. “I could have asked some of the other boys to see if they had a better view but thought I would get on with the game. Maybe I should have asked a few of the lads.”
