“Maybe Umran had an argument,” feels Virender Sehwag about reason for Umran Malik’s exclusion from SRH playing XI
The captain also did not have an answer when he was asked about the reason behind Umran warming benches.
Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umran Malik burst into the scenes through the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the pace sensation starred for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022. Malik took 22 wickets in 14 appearances for SRH in the previous edition of the tournament. This performance also helped Umran get a national call-up and India’s new pace sensation did fairly well.
With the ODI World Cup scheduled to take place in India this year and Umran Malik in the Indian team management’s scheme of things, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were expected to play Malik throughout the course of the tournament. However, much to everyone’s surprise, the J&K pacer featured in only seven matches for SRH this season. The captain also did not have an answer when he was asked about the reason behind Umran Malik warming benches.
Markram cited some “behind the scenes” reasons and it was baffling to many. Meanwhile, former India cricketer Virender Sehwag gave a possible answer to this question. Sehwag feels that Umran might have had an argument with the team management and thus has been warming the bench.
“I truly did not understand what ‘behind the scene’ meant. Maybe that he (Umran) had a spat with the management or maybe there was some misbehaviour, then that is bad. You were given an opportunity, you did not perform, now you have to wait until your next chance. You should shut the mouths with your performance,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.
Player or management- who is at fault?
Interestingly, this is not the first instance where an SRH captain has looked clueless about the changes in the squad. Right before David Warner was sacked as the skipper, he also made similar comments. Also, Mohammad Nabi who was a part of SRH for a couple of seasons, also claimed that the likes of David Warner and Rashid Khan were mishandled by the franchise.
