For the second time, the Netherlands produced one of the biggest upsets at the World Cup stage. After denying South Africa further advancement in the T20 World Cup last year, the Dutchmen restricted Temba Bavuma‘s men for 207 runs to win the match by 38 runs in the ongoing ODI World Cup on Tuesday (October 17) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.
The match was halted for a while due to rain and the overs for both sides were reduced to 43 each. The Netherlands, with captain Sean Edwards’ match-winning unbeaten 78 and 20-plus scores from two batters ensured the team reached a decent 245/8 in 43 overs.
The Proteas were expected to somehow chase down the target but after the dismissal of the openers, their wickets started falling like a pack of cards and before anyone could guess what was happening, the Proteas lost half of their wickets for 89 runs. But the Dutch found it tough to ensure a quick victory because David Miller stubbornly held on to the crease; but at one time, a fielder even dropped his catch.
But Miller couldn’t capitalize much as Logan van Beek bowled him out to bring the Netherlands back into the game. The victory was ensured when Miller got out despite Keshav Maharaj‘s cameo in the last few overs. With just one wicket at hand, Maharaj was the last hope for the Proteas. But South Africa did not have many overs to bat and soon, and as a result, they could score 207, losing the match by 38 runs.
Netizens are surprised to see the Netherlands stun South Africa again
Knowing the nature of social media fans, they took no time to flood X (formerly Twitter) with memes to celebrate the Netherlands’ stunning victory and to laugh at South Africa for their second-time defeat to the Dutchmen. Some fans again attributed the tag “chokers” to the Proteas, given their history of losing matches at crucial moments.
