“MI captain Nitin Menon,” Netizens left shocked as umpire uses DRS to Mumbai Indians’ benefit in SRH vs MI

The 25th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 had Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) hosting Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. SRH captain Aiden Markram won the toss and decided to bowl first. However, SRH bowlers could not complement their captain’s decision as MI went on to post 192/5 in their designated 20 overs. Cameron Green with his 40-ball 64* starred for Mumbai while Tilak Varma (37 off 17) also chipped in. Meanwhile, the MI bowlers did a great job to bowl out SRH for 178 and win the match by 14 runs. While there were so many moments that caught the attention of the cricket fans, on-field umpire Nitin Menon doing something unusual topped the chart.

In the 3rd over of the SRH innings, Menon made an interesting decision that left the viewers baffled. As Arjun Tendulkar bowled a delivery way down the leg side, Ishan Kishan grabbed the ball cleanly. With the ball passing close to Mayan Agarwal’s bat, Kishan and Arjun went for a caught-behind appeal.

In normal situations, the umpire would have waited for the fielding team to ask for DRS and if not, give his decision. But Nitin Menon did none of these and instead went upstairs seeking help from the TV umpire to check if there was an edge. This strange decision from Menon attracted criticism from the fans as they asked if he was favouring MI.

When can an umpire opt for a review?

umpires

While Nitin Menon was well within his rights to ask for a review, it was not within the rules. An on-field umpire can ask for a review in three cases while reviewing a dismissal- Run out, Caught and Obstructing the field, whether it was a no-ball. However, an umpire cannot seek help from the TV umpire while judging an LBW call unless they want to check for a no-ball.
