On Monday (October 24), Pakistan faced a humiliating loss to Afghanistan for the first time in ODIs after seven consecutive wins. After the match, former England captain Michael Vaughan wasted no time in taking a subtle dig at Pakistan’s director of cricket, Mickey Arthur.
On a tough pitch at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, the resilient Afghan batters chased away 283 runs to hammer Babar Azam and company by eight wickets. Rahmanullah Gurbaz once again played a brilliant knock, scoring 65 runs from 53 balls, and also sticthed a 130-run stand with the other opener Ibrahim Zadran, who top scored (87 off 113) and collected the Player of the Match award later.
After their dismissals, Rahmat Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi continued to attack the Pakistani bowlers, and a four from the captain in the penultimate over ensured Afghanistan the victory.
Michael Vaughan, who once took a dig at Pakistan with the ‘Dil Dil Pakistan‘ remark, again rubbed salt on their wounds and took a subtle dig at Mickey Arthur on X. Arthur, after Pakistan’s defeat to India had said, “It seemed like a bilateral series; it seemed like a BCCI event. I didn’t hear Dil Dil Pakistan coming through the microphones too often tonight.”
And Vaughan, on X, wrote: “I presume ‘Dil Dil’ Pakistan wasn’t played in Chennai today.”

Pakistan’s chances to advance to the semifinals are hanging by thread. They are currently occupying the fifth position on the points table with two wins from five matches. They registered three consecutive defeats, against India, Australia, and Afghanistan. They will have another challenge ahead of them as they will be meeting South Africa on October 27.
