Despite the huge pool of talent, huge amount of funds and the IPL, India have failed to win anything of significant value. They won their last ICC event over a decade ago, when MS Dhoni led India to the Champions Trophy in 2013.

Former English Captain, Michael Vaughan, claims the Indian team have massively underachieved, while he was working for Fox Cricket during their coverage of the Boxing Day Test match. When asked if the Indian was underachieving after their loss to South Africa, Vaughan gave a blunt answer.

They haven't won much in recent times. I think they are (an underachieving side). They don't win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skill set. They've won in Australia twice.

He added:

Magnificent, but the last few World Cups, have been nowhere, in the last few T20 World Cups, been nowhere. You go to South Africa, who are, you know, useful in Test match cricket and to produce a performance like that…I mean, with all the talent they have, and the resources they have, I don't think they win anything.

India’s loss in South Africa was the first time since 2021 they lost by an innings. The last Test series they won in any SENA nation was in 2021, when they beat Australia in Australia. Since then, they have drawn in England, lost in South Africa and currently can salvage a series draw in SA again.

Sachin Tendulkar claims poor shot selection cost India Test match

After India’s innings loss, Sachin Tendulkar spoke about where he felt India lost the match. In a tweet, he praised the South African pace attack for bowling out India despite the easy batting conditions. Even though he praised the South African bowling, he claimed India’s poor shot selection cost them the Test. He further added that only a few batters looked at ease on the pitch, namely Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen.

India play the 2nd Test on 3rd January at Cape Town. With Temba Bavuma out, Dean Elgar will be captaining his final Test match. India will look to salvage a draw to ensure they get WTC points as well.
