Former India Women captain Mithali Raj under whom Harmanpreet Kaur played for many years, said her unruly behavior during the third ODI match against Bangladesh in Dhaka cannot be condoned. Raj also asked Harmanpreet to not repeat such behavior because the aspiring kids emulate the players.

In her column for the Hindustan Times, Raj asked the Indian captain to channel her emotions better next time and show respect toward the opposition. She said though it’s okay to be aggressive, the player should not forget that the game is above individuals.

If it is true what is being reported in the media in respect to Harman’s behavior towards the opposition captain during the photo session with the trophy, it is simply disgraceful and atrocious,” she wrote in her column. She then asked Harmanpreet to correct her mistake and control her emotions better on and off the field as well.

Harmanpreet Kaur was given out by the umpire off a delivery by Nahida Akter. Harman was sure the ball hit her bottom edge but as she was deemed out, furious over this decision she shattered the stumps.

She did not just stop there. At the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet launched a scathing attack on the umpires publicly, calling umpiring level “pathetic”. Because of her behavior, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana walked away with the team, asking Indian players to learn some manners at first.

Needless to say, Harman’s behavior did not go unnoticed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The apex body slapped her with four demerit points, meaning she will miss two forthcoming T20Is in the knockout games in the 2023 Asian Games. Her deputy Smriti Mandhana is set to lead the team. She was also fined 75 percent of her match fees.
