Mohammed Shami was not in contention for India’s playing XI during the 2023 ODI World Cup as it affected the team’s balance. After Hardik Pandya got injured, he played 7 World Cup matches and picked up 24 wickets, finishing as the highest wicket taker of the tournament.
He didn’t get to travel to South Africa for the Test series due to an ankle injury. He was missed as India lost the first Test by an innings due to poor bowling and batting. In an article by PTI regarding Prasidh Krishna’s poor debut, it was revealed that Shami was suffering from a chronic ankle injury. To ensure he was available, the pacer took painkiller injections.
That same injury has now caused him to miss the South Africa tour, where the Indian team misses his services. He might return to India’s home series against England, where India play 5 Test matches from January to March.
