Amid cries among Indian fans to sack Rohit Sharma as captain, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh backed the India skipper for the ODI World Cup and said that just like MS Dhoni, Rohit also needs a good team to succeed. Most of the time, the whole blame goes to the captain if the team loses matches, which is why Rohit has to face the wrath of the Indian fans and pundits.

Rohit became captain after Virat Kohli and as the former has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to five trophies in the Indian Premier League (IPL), many had expected Rohit to do the same while leading India. But under Rohit, India suffered defeats in the T20 World Cup last year as well as the World Test Championship (WTC) Final this year.

But Yuvraj backed the under-fired Rohit and compared the present team with that of 2011 when MS Dhoni was the captain. Dhoni led Men in Blue to the ODI World Cup after a long wait of 28 years. Yuvraj had fired on all cylinders in the tournament and won the Player of the Tournament award as well. India back then had players like Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, and a young Virat Kohli in the squad.

I think Rohit has become a very good leader because he has led the Mumbai Indians in the IPL for such a long time,” said Yuvraj on the ‘Cricket Basu’ YouTube Channel. “You need to give a good team to a sensible captain who is experienced as well. MS Dhoni was a good captain, but he also got a good team right?”

Rohit Sharma was not a part of the squad for the 2011 ODI World Cup and he has not experienced victory in ICC events except the 2013 Champions Trophy. This year’s ODI World Cup will be held in India and the Men in Blue will be relying on crown support a lot.

Rohit is hopeful that this time Team India wins the coveted trophy. “I’ve never seen it so close. Even when we won in 2011, I was not part of the squad,” Rohit was quoted as saying by the ICC.
