MS Dhoni set to achieve another milestone, to play his 200th match as CSK captain

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has achieved numerous milestones in his cricketing career. While Dhoni has hung his boots at the international level, Dhoni is still plying his trade for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). And as the CSK captain gets ready to lead the Chennai-based franchise for one more time on Wednesday (12 April), Dhoni will be adding another feather to his already decorated cap.
It will be Dhoni’s 200th match as CSK captain when he leads the team against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Wednesday. With this, Dhoni will become the first-ever cricketer in the history of the Indian T20 league to lead a team in 200 matches.
Dhoni has led a team in IPL on 213 instances. Out of these 213 matches, Dhoni has captained CSK 199 times, the rest 14 matches came as the captain of the now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants (RPSG). In 199 matches, Dhoni has successfully led Chennai 120 times while he has faced 78 defeats as CSK captain. Overall, Dhoni has won 125 matches and lost 87 of them. Also, Dhoni has won four titles with CSK.
While Dhoni leads the chart in terms of leading a team in IPL the most number of times, Mumbai Indians (MI) Rohit Sharma comes second. The MI skipper has captained 146 matches. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has led Royal Challengers Bangalore in 140 IPL matches.
Is Dhoni the most successful IPL captain?
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) now into its sixteenth edition, one question that always crosses everyone’s mind- who is the most successful captain in the Indian T20 league? While the numbers point towards Rohit Sharma, who has won five IPL titles so far, MS Dhoni is undoubtedly the most consistent captain in IPL.
Dhoni is the only captain to reach the IPL finals nine times. The former India captain had led CSK to the title in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. Dhoni’s four-time champions side finished as runners-up in seasons 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019. He also played for RPSG in the summit clash of IPL 2017.
