MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is set to play his last Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament this year. A CSK official has confirmed the same recently.
“Yes, it will be MS’s last season as a player. That is what we know so far. But of course, it’s his decision. He hasn’t officially communicated to the management that he will go into retirement. It is a special occasion for all CSK fans as IPL returns to Chennai. But will be a sad moment if Dhoni plays his final season,” a CSK official told the InsideSport website.
The 41-year-old has already bid adieu to international cricket on August 15, 2020, via an Instagram post. Last year, he stepped down from captaincy a couple of days before the start of the 15th edition of IPL.
Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was handed the captaincy reigns but the Yellow-based franchise had a terrible season under Jadeja, and he led only eight before Dhoni took up the leadership role again. But still, he couldn’t resurrect the campaign, and the four-time champions ended up second last on the points table. CSK will be forgetting the last season and will be eyeing their fifth trophy in IPL 2023.
Dhoni has been with the CSK since the inaugural IPL season in 2008. During CSK’ ban for two years, the Ranchi-based cricketer led the Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Which match will be MS Dhoni’s last in IPL 2023?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the schedule for the upcoming cash-rich league on Friday (February 17). As the tournament will return to the home-and-away fixtures this season, CSK will be playing their home matches in Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.
CSK will open their campaign against defending champions Gujarat Titans in the curtain raiser on March 31, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They will be playing their first home game against Lucknow Super Giants on April 4.
If CSK fail to qualify for the playoffs, then May 14 will be Dhoni’s last game at the Chepauk Stadium. On that day, CSK will be locking horns with the Kolkata Knight Riders, while CSK’s last match will be against Delhi Capitals in Delhi.
