Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s former teammate at Rising Pune Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Manoj Tiwary made a U-turn on his decision to retire from all forms of cricket. While Tiwary announced his retirement on Thursday (3 August), the Bengal cricketer announced that he will play for one more season in the Ranji Trophy on Tuesday (8 August).
Tiwary reasoned that he announced his retirement because of being too emotional and now wants to lead Bengal in one more season of the Ranji Trophy. The 37-year-old announced his decision to reverse his retirement in a press conference held on Tuesday.
“The decision taken by me was a sudden one. I was selfish in taking this decision as this might have hurt my family, teammates, and fans. My wife also scolded me after I posted the announcement on social media. After that, I spoke to Snehashish (da), and he convinced me to play for Bengal for one more season,” said Tiwary (via Cricbuzz).
“The love and respect I got from CAB is unforgettable and you must remember that what CAB does for its players is unparalleled. I would like to apologize to fans and my well-wishers, and I hope to give my best next season and bring glory for Bengal,” Tiwary added.
Manoj Tiwary- a first-class cricketer
Manoj Tiwary might not have created an impact in International cricket in the limited opportunities he has gotten but the 37-year-old has surely left a mark in domestic cricket, especially first-class cricket. Tiwary has close to 10,000 runs (9908 to be precise) in 225 first-class innings.
The right-handed batter averages an impressive 48.56 in the red-ball format. Apart from that, Manoj Tiwary also has 5581 runs in 169 List A matches. The 37-year-old has also been a great captain, guiding Bengal to finals last season. But as Bengal missed out on a chance to lay hands on the elusive title, Tiwary wants to give it one more try.
