Manoj Tiwary recently retired from all forms of cricket after the Bengal cricket team failed to make it to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Ranji Trophy. He had retired in 2023, after losing the finals to Saurashtra, but decided to return to red-ball cricket.
Now retired, the Bengal MLA spoke to Sports Now. He spoke about how MS Dhoni did not give him enough chances in the Indian team and how he wasn’t happy young players were not prioritizing the Ranji Trophy.
When asked if he has any regrets, Tiwary said he regretted the fight he had with Gautam Gambhir. It happened during a Ranji Trophy game in 2015. Tiwary came in to bat without a helmet and realized a pacer was getting ready to bowl. He quickly called for his helmet, which enraged Gambhir.
The fight I had with Gambhir that day is the only regret I have because people who know me will tell you that I am not that sort of a person who goes out there and quarrels with seniors. It is one of those memories that I could have avoided. I have a good relationship with my seniors, but due to one incident, it spoilt my image.Manoj Tiwari said
Gambhir threatened to beat him up after the day’s play, which Tiwary did not take well. The two started a verbal spat, and the umpires needed to intervene.
Why does Manoj Tiwary regret his fight with Gautam Gambhir?
Manoj Tiwary claims he had a good relationship with Gautam Gambhir, who used to be his captain at Kolkata Knight Riders. He said he had a good relationship with Gambhir, and had also suggested getting Sunil Narine to the team.
Manoj Tiwari saidThat is why I said it is my biggest regret because we were very close at one point in time. While playing for KKR, we used to have a lot of discussions and brainstorm over who to pick in Kolkata. The relationship was such that we used to go into details and inputs. But things did not pan out the way that they should have.
Tiwary was released from KKR in 2013, joining Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in 2014. He played for teams like Rising Pune Supergiant and Kings XI Punjab. Since 2019, he has not featured in a single IPL, but has played consistently for Bengal.
