Mumbai Indians assigns central roles to Zaheer Khan and Mahela Jayawardene for its growing global cricket footprint

The Mumbai Indians management assigned central roles to former India pacer Zaheer Khan and former Sri Lanka batter Mahela Jayawardene for consistency across the group’s three T20 teams- Mumbai Indians, MI Emirates (of the International T20 League), and MI Cape Town (of SA20).

Zaheer is currently the IPL Director of Cricket Operations, Mumbai Indians . Now that he has been appointed as the Global Head of Cricket Development by the MI franchise, he will oversee player development, building on MI’s robust programme around talent identification and grooming and adopting the same across countries.

Zaheer Khan as Global Head of Cricket Development, MI said, “I am humbled to take on this new role and thank Mrs. Nita Ambani and Akash for their faith in me. MI has been home for me as a player and as a coaching team member, and now as we embark on a new journey, I look ahead to working closely with all the stakeholders in the global network to unearth new potential that can join the family.”

Mahela Jayawardene is Mumbai Indians‘ current head coach and has now been appointed Global Head of Performance. His work will now involve the senior leadership of the group’s cricket operations worldwide. It will include overall strategic planning, the creation of an integrated global high-performance ecosystem, as well as responsibility for each team’s coaching and support structures. In addition, it will involve working closely with the team’s head coaches to ensure synergies, a consistent brand of cricket, and implementation of best practices set by MI.
