Shreyas Iyer was recently dropped from the BCCI central contracts. An important part of the Indian player during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he scored 500+ runs, fans were not happy with the move. Recently it was revealed that the middle order batter had to use painkillers to play in the World Cup thanks to his back injuries. 

An insider in an interview with the RevSportz revealed that there was a miscommunication that caused Iyer to not get a contract. According to the insider, Iyer was suffering from back spasms, which started after he played 60 balls in a session.

Instead of reporting to the National Cricket Academy, Iyer went to the Kolkata Knight Riders pre-season camp. He had also pulled out of Mumbai’s quarter-final clash with Baroda due to the back injury.  

He worked with the KKR coaches to build the strength to play over 200 balls per session, which Mumbai head coach Omkar Salvi knew about. After working with the KKR coaches, he regained full fitness and made himself available for the Ranji Trophy. 

Meanwhile Ajit Agarkar, the Chief Selector, thought the batter had gone to the KKR camp to prepare for the IPL, which enraged him. The NCA had also declared him fit, which led the BCCI to not give him a central contract.

Although he had injury issues and was no longer a part of the Indian Test team, Shreyas Iyer worked towards returning to play for Mumbai. Despite this, he was dropped from the BCCI contract lists, which enraged a KKR official. He asked why Iyer was treated like this, while players like KL Rahul got a BCCI contract.

KL Rahul went to London for the treatment of his quadriceps pain. Nobody has asked a question. And when was the last time KL Rahul turned up for a Ranji game? He is also an injury-prone cricketer who has missed series and matches. A player is the best judge in terms of assessing his body.

Rahul is currently in the United Kingdom, visiting a specialist in regards to his pain in the right quadriceps. Iyer meanwhile is in Mumbai, playing for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-finals against Tamil Nadu. He has not yet gotten a chance to bat.
