Ravichandran Aswhin was the wrecker-in-chief in shattering Australia. He was in the minds of the Australians even before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

They have tried to practice with Mahesh Pithiya (whose bowling is similar to that of Ashwin) in their four-day camp in Bengaluru. But they faltered quickly before the veteran off-spinner in the second innings in Nagpur.

India, owing to Ashwin’s quick five-wicket haul in the second innings, wrapped up the first Test within three days by bundling out the visitors for 91 (their second-lowest score against India). And after claiming eight wickets there, the 36-year-old has now overall 457 wickets in Tests; he even leaped to the second spot in the ICC Men’s Test Bowlers Rankings, and is 21 points behind Aussie skipper and pacer Pat Cummins. It is highly expected of Ashwin to return to the No.1 ranking for the first time since 2017.

The host are now leading in the four-match series by 1-0 after winning the first Test by an innings and 132 runs. Indian spinners scalped 16 out of 20 Australian wickets. Ashwin, in the first innings, took three wickets. Ravindra Jadeja completed his fifer in the first and bagged two more in the second innings, while Axar Patel got one.

Nathan Lyon, who was expected to put India in tatters, did not have the best show; he scalped just one wicket. Ahead of the second Test, Star Sports released a video where the Aussie spinner revealed how obsessed he is with Ravichandran Ashwin and that he has been studying a lot before the start of the series. He especially watched Ashwin’s match-winning videos, so much, that it drove his wife ‘mad’.

I’m not going to pin myself against Ash. I think the way Ashwin has gone about it has been remarkable and his records speaks for itself,” Lyon said.

To be honest, I am a totally different bowler to Ash. Have I sat down and watched a lot of footage of Ashwin before coming over here? Yes, 100 percent. I’ve spent a lot of time sitting at home in front of laptop, driving my wife mad. It’s all about learning,” he added.

India will be playing the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi from February 17.
