More than his cricket, Naveen ul Haq‘s celebration and social media posts have hogged the limelight in this Indian Premier League (IPL) season. It all started during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) where an ugly brawl involving Virat Kohli, Naveen, and Gautam Gambhir became the biggest talking point of the town.
Then some social media activities attracted the attention. Naveen ul Haq posted ‘sweet mangoes’ as well as the famous ‘God have mercy upon us’ meme after RCB’s underwhelming performances. No matter where the match takes place, Naveen is always at the receiving end of the crowd’s ‘Kohli Kohli’ chants and netizens’ trolls. He even celebrated after taking wickets with the shut-the-noise gesture against Mumbai Indians (MI) yesterday and after LSG’s elimination, the Afghan pacer broke his silence on the ‘Kohli Kohli’ chants from the crowds.
“I enjoy it. I like everyone in the ground chanting his (Virat Kohli) name or any other player’s name. It gives me passion to play well for my team,” said Naveen at the post-match conference after LSG were knocked out from IPL 2023 by MI by 81 runs in the Eliminator on Wednesday (May 24).
“Well I don’t concentrate on the outside or the noise from outside or anything else. I just focus on my own cricket and my own process. Crowd chanting or anyone saying something doesn’t affect me,” the Afghan pacer added.
Naveen ul Haq talks about ‘legend’ of Indian cricket Gautam Gambhir
LSG mentor Gautam Gambhir backed Naveen since their spat with Kohli. A couple of days after that incident, Naveen posted a picture with Gambhir with the caption: “Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be talked to.” Gambhir then dropped a comment: “Be who you are!! ‘Never Change.“
In the press conference, when the 23-year-old was asked about his relationship with Gambhir, Naveen said everyone (coach, mentor, or player) should back their own players and that he has learned many things from the 2011 World Cup-winning champion.
“He (Gambhir) has been a legend for India, he has huge respect in India. He has given so much to Indian cricket. As a mentor, as a coach, as a legend of cricket, I respect him a lot and have learned so many things from him,” Naveen said.
