Before the start of the 2024 IPL, Mumbai Indians had completed a cash trade with Gujarat Titans to bring back Hardik Pandya. While the move was a shock, it was nothing compared to their next move.
MI announced that they removed Rohit Sharma as their captain, replacing him with their newest signing, Hardik Pandya. This move did not sit well with fans, pundits and it seems the teammates as well. Many criticized MI for the way they disrespected their former captain, who won them five IPL titles.
Navjot Singh Sidhu, who recently returned to commentary, has also criticized MI for removing Rohit Sharma from his post. He spoke out the words of fans who wondered what Sharma did to deserve this treatment.
Nobody can digest the fact that India's hero, India's captain, is not the captain of our franchise. 'What wrong has he done?' is what fans of the franchise would be thinking,Navjot Singh Sidhu on Star Sports
Sidhu also believed Pandya was made captain because he was rumored to captain the Indian team in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Pandya had captained the Indian side when Sharma was unavailable in 2022 and 2023. Sidhu believes if the BCCI announced that Sharma would be captaining the Indian side beforehand, MI would not have made Pandya the skipper.
Another fan breaches security, hugs Rohit Sharma
Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, many fans in India have managed to make their way past the barriers and security to get on the field. It has already happened once in the WPL and once in the IPL.
During Mumbai Indians’ first match at the Wankhede, where MI lost to Rajasthan Royals, a pitch invader managed to get on the field. He ran up to the pitch, where Rohit Sharma was standing at slips.
He went up to Sharma, who was startled at first. Once he realized it was a fan, he hugged him. The fan then shook Ishan Kishan’s hand, hugged him, and ran back to the stands with the fans cheering from him.
