This happened in the 18th over, Australia were tethering at 70/5 when Rabada aimed for the leg stump. Stoinis tried to flick the ball from inside the line but instead, it hit somewhere near the handle and went past the bat to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock’s gloves.
The on-field umpire turned down the appeal and the Proteas decided to go upstairs. The third umpire, however, reversed the decision and a disappointed Stoinis left the field and watched the footage in the dressing room. Before Stoinis, Steve Smith became a victim of a third umpire’s controversial call. The ball would have hit on the leg side and wouldn’t have hit the stumps, which would have been umpire’s ball but Ball Tracking showed the three reds.
