England coach Brendon McCullum hit back hard at the Australians for running out Jonny Bairstow while England’s wicketkeeper batter wandered carelessly out of his crease in the second innings of Lord’s Test. McCullum was so angry that he said he can’t imagine sitting for a beer with this Australian team anytime soon.
Although McCullum accepted that Bairstow was out, the England coach called the dismissal against the ‘spirit of the game’. “When you become older and more mature, you realize the game and the spirit of it is something you need to protect,” McCullum said to BBC.
However, netizens are not too fine with McCullum lecturing about the spirit of the game. A few also dug out a couple of old video clips wherein McCullum is seen pulling off a similar kind of runout.
While in the above clip the then-New Zealand wicket-keeper runs out Muttiah Muralitharan, in the second he attempts a run out against an English player.
Not just Brendon McCullum, whole England culprit of being hypocrites
While many took aim at Brendon McCullum, a few fans also pointed out how the whole England team players are talking like hypocrites. A user shared a video of England running out New Zealand’s Colin de Grandhome in the same manner during a Test match.
Putting the last nail in the coffin, a fan shared a clip of Jonny Bairstow himself attempting to run out Marnus Labuschange on Day 3 of the second Ashes Test.
It would have been interesting to see if Ben Stokes withdrew the appeal had the balls hit the bails here and Labuschagne was out of his crease. But we will never know.
