Whenever Australia played India on the subcontinent, they struggled a great deal while facing the spinners. This happened again during both the teams’ campaign opener in the 2023 ODI World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (October 8). For India, Ravindra Jadeja rocked.
On the Chennai pitch which is deemed as a turner by the fans, the Aussies produced lackluster performance with the bat. Not one batter could reach the 50-run mark, and the highest score came from Steve Smith (46 off 71).
Although Jasprit Bumrah gave the breakthrough with the new ball, David Warner and Smith looked dangerous in the middle overs and the watchers of the game were predicting a 300-plus total on the scoreboard. But the moment Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Warner, the other spinners, Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin joined the chinaman to show the other Aussie batters the way back to the dugout.
While Kuldeep picked up two wickets for 42 runs in 10 overs, and Ashwin conceded 34 runs for one wicket in his 10 overs, Jadeja was the pick of Indian bowlers with his 3/28 in his full quota of overs. He was the most economical of all bowlers with an economy rate of 2.8. His victims were Smith, Alex Carey, and Marnus Labuchagne.

Thanks to Ravindra Jadeja’s overs, Australia slowly reached 199 in 49.3 overs. Apart from Steve Smith‘s 46 off 71, David Warner contributed 41 runs from 52 balls, while pacer Mitchell Starc (28 off 35) tried to quickly score runs but his wicket wrapped up the Aussies’ innings.
