Australia, the five-time ODI World Cup champions, lost two consecutive matches in the 2023 edition of the quadrennial tournament. On Thursday (October 12), South Africa hammered them by 134 runs at the Ekana Sports City stadium in Lucknow.
After Australia won the toss, they decided to bowl first and his decision backfired. The Ekana pitch was known to be a tough surface to bat on. But South Africa’s Quinton de Kock, who is playing his last World Cup, ended up slamming his second back-to-back century following his brilliant knock against Sri Lanka. He scored 109 runs off 106 balls, the most for his side.
Later, Aiden Markram’s 56 off 44 runs and small scores from other batters took the Proteas to 311/7 in their 50 overs. During their run chase, Aussie batters struggled from the word go, and before they could reach 100, they lost six batters for 70 runs.
The batters huffed and puffed to 177 and after sending Josh Hazelwood to the dugout, the Proteas wrapped up the match to win it by 134 runs. This became the biggest margin of defeat for the Aussies.
