Defending champions England faced another defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup. This time, South Africa hammered them by a huge margin of 229 runs on Saturday (October 21) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Proteas posted 399/7, then restricted Jos Buttler‘s men to 170 in 22 overs.

The reason behind South Africa’s mammoth total was Heinrich Klaasen‘s onslaught. He scored 109 off just 67 balls, while Reeza Hendricks and Marco Jansen scored 85 and 77* runs respectively.

England started their run chase poorly. The openers could stitch just 18 runs and the watchers of the game were eagerly waiting to see a quick fall of wickets, knowing that the defending champions will find it tough to chase down the target under intense pressure.

The batters produced some lackluster performances and interestingly, Mark Wood who delivered the most expensive spells scored the most runs. From just 17 runs, he scored an unbeaten 43 runs with two boundaries and five sixes at an immense strike rate of 252.94. But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for his side to chase the target. The second highest scorer was Gus Atkinson who scored 35 runs from 21 balls.
