Mohammed Shami got the opportunity to play for India for the first time in the 2023 ODI World Cup. After being benched for four matches, Shami, when included to play against New Zealand on Sunday (October 22), ended up wreaking havoc with his 2nd World Cup fifer at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.
After India won the toss and decided to field first, Mohammed Siraj gave the first breakthrough when he dismissed Devon Conway for a duck. Shami picked up his first wicket when he dismissed Will Young in the ninth over.
After Young’s dismissal, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell steadied their ship with a strong partnership which Shami broke by sending Ravindra to packing in the 34th over. He then got rid of Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, and Daryl Mitchell to complete his fifer. He conceded 54 runs in his 10 overs.
Not just this fifer, no bowler had a better average, lower strike rate, wickets, and fifers than Shami in the 48 years of ODI World Cup history after 12 innings. He has bagged 36 wickets from those 12 innings in the prestigious tournaments.
Netizens heap praise on Mohammed Shami for his incredible achievements in World Cups
Mohammed Shami became the first Indian bowler to bag two fifers in the history of ODI World Cup. Overall, he is the ninth bowler to take two World Cup fifers.
According to fans, Shami’s numbers in World Cups indicate why Team India should include him in the playing XI by benching Shardul Thakur who got the nod ahead of Shami for the team’s batting depth. Indian fans say the team is blessed to have the pace trio- Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah.
