Ben Stokes undoubtedly is England’s one of the biggest assets right now. Out of the two World Cups England won, Stokes played clutch knocks in the finals to power the team to glory. He sent a wave of shock through the cricket fraternity when he suddenly announced his decision to retire from ODI cricket last July. And if there were talks surrounding his reversing of his decision, he took no time to stop the rumors that he won’t take a U-turn.
But he took the U-turn, just around two months before the start of the ICC ODI World Cup, slated to take place in India from October 5. He will join the rest of the squad led by Jos Buttler for their title defense in India. England will kick start their ODI World Cup campaign on the opening day of the prestigious tournament against the last edition’s runners-up New Zealand.
The 32-year-old decided to bid adieu to ODI cricket because of an unsustainable cricketing schedule. He wanted to give his total commitment to Test and T20I cricket, including the league matches.
But England coach Matthew Mott and white-ball skipper Jos Buttler had other things on their mind. They prevailed upon Stokes to change his mind and finally lured him to take the U-turn. On Wednesday (August 16), England Cricket Board (ECB) announced the squad for the forthcoming ODI and T20I series against New Zealand and one can see Stokes’ name in the squad.

Knowing fans, instead of positively accepting the decision, there are too much of strong reactions. Several cricketers have reversed their retirement decisions and Ben Stokes now has now joined the list. Fans feel such things make a mockery of retirement.
