Ben Stokes almost secured the victory for England but Australia held their nerves and registered a stunning win at the Lord’s on Sunday (July 2) to take a 2-0 lead in the Ashes series. They have inched closer to retaining the trophy thanks to the three fast and furious pacers- Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.
After Australia controversially dismissed Jonny Bairstow, skipper Stokes opened his arms and started sending the ball across the boundary rope. He smashed nine boundaries and an equal number of maximums to score 155 runs off 214 balls and almost pulled off the victory single-handedly.
Thanks to Hazlewood to the relief of his teammates, his short ball did the job for the team. Stokes tried to sweep the ball but top-edged it and keeper Alex Carey ran toward his left to secure the catch and assured the victory.
Stokes was dismissed in the 73rd over and in the next over Cummins got rid of Ollie Robinson, followed by Stuart Broad’s dismissal by Hazlewood. Josh Tongue was the last to depart and with his departure, the hosts got skittled out for 327, with Australia winning the match by 43 runs.
