The Netherlands were considered a weak team in front of Asian giants Pakistan when the two teams locked horns on Friday (October 6) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. However, the way the Dutchmen fought was nothing short of praiseworthy.
Their young all-rounder Bas de Leede stole the limelight for his brilliant efforts with both the bat and the ball. De Leede became the youngest player in an ODI World Cup to scalp four wickets and score 50 runs in a match.
After the Netherlands chose to field first, they did not let Pakistan settle for a long time. With regular wickets, the Dutch players were making it hard for the Pakistani batters to stitch a stand. And though Pakistan were able to find the momentum for a while, de Leede stopped them from going big. His first wicket was Mohammad Rizwan (68 off 75), then Iftikhar Ahmed (nine off 11)- both fell in the 32nd over.
De Leede then broke the partnership of Shadab Khan and Mohammed Nawaz by sending the former to the dugout. And on the next ball, he dismissed Hasan Ali for a golden duck. In nine overs, de Leede scalped four wickets for 62 runs at an economy rate of 6.89. Later, with the bat, he scored 67 runs off 68 balls with six boundaries and two sixes.
Fans were awed by Bas de Leede’s all-round performance
The fact that Bas de Leede came from an associate nation producing such a scintillating performance against a strong team like Pakistan was enough for cricket fans to shower their praise. The Indian fans foresee de Leede signing an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract next year.

Pakistan got bundled out for 286 runs, but their bowlers did not disappoint them as they skittled out the Netherlands for 205 runs to win the match by 81 runs. After this match, Pakistan will lock horns with Sri Lanka on October 10. The Netherlands will face New Zealand on October 9.
