England have an arduous task ahead of them as they have to chase down 400 hundred to win the World Cup match against South Africa. The Proteas, with the help of Heinrich Klaasen‘s century and two fifties from other batters, posted a mammoth total of 399/7 in their 50 overs on Saturday (October 21) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
England’s decision to elect to the field after winning the toss did not work for them. And though South African opener Quinton de Kock did not play a great knock like his previous innings, Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen scored their fifties. Hendricks scored 85 off 75 while van der Dussen made 60 runs from 61 balls.
Aiden Markram also contributed 42 runs from 44 balls. And though David Miller’s bat did not talk in this game, Marco Jansen and Klaasen started feasting on English bowlers. Klaasen departed in the final over after making 109 runs from 67 balls, while Jansen remained unbeaten for 75 runs from 42 balls.
Among the English bowlers, Mark Wood bowled the most expensive spells. He conceded 76 runs from seven overs, while Reece Topley gave away 88 runs from 8.5 overs. Such below-average performance from the English bowlers triggered social media fans to come up with memes to laugh at their misery.
