That Pat Cummins will attract franchises was known before. That he is the 2023 ODI World Cup winning captain, it was enough for a franchise to go for him, maybe to make him their captain.

When his name was announced in the auction in Dubai on December 19, the arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) went into a bidding war. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) joined the bandwagon, and prices went up in the blink of an eye.

SRH, who bought Cummins’ compatriot Travis Head (who scored a century in the final against India) for Rs 6.80, did not let go of Cummins. And now, the Aussie skipper will don the orange jersey in next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL).

Cummins used to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but he did not play in the 2022 IPL due to a hectic international schedule to rest for the Ashes, World Test Championship (WTC) final, and 2023 ODI World Cup (drawing the Ashes, and winning the two ICC events as captain). He, however, announced that he would play in IPL 2024, and now he surpassed Sam Curran (18.50) and became the most expensive player in the history of IPL after being sold for Rs 20.50 crore.

Netizens are not happy with SRH for buying Pat Cummins, but happy for Aussie skipper for achieving a lot in 2023
