Before anyone could guess what was happening, Sri Lanka got bundled out for 50 runs in 15.2 overs against India in the 2023 Asia Cup final on Sunday (September 17) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Mohammed Siraj was the one who deserves high praise as he broke Sri Lanka’s back with his six-wicket haul.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka chose to bat first. The match started a bit late due to rain. However, the moment Sri Lanka started batting, Jasprit Bumrah got rid of opener Kusal Perera in the first over for a silver duck.

Then in the third over, Siraj dismissed four batters. He took the wickets of Pathum Nissanka Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya de Silva. In the sixth over, after dismissing Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka’s wicket, Siraj completed his fifer. He bagged his sixth wicket after sending Kusal Mendis to packing in the 12th over. Siraj, in seven overs, dismissed six batters at an economy rate of 3 and conceded 21 runs.

Later, Sri Lanka’s problem was compounded when Hardik Pandya came for bowling. First, he dismissed Dunith Wellalage in the 13th over, then sent the left two batters to the dugout in the 16th over. Sri Lanka gave a target of a mere 51 runs to India.
