David Warner on the morning of 1st January announced his retirement from One Day Internationals. He announced it in a press conference two days before his last Test, which will be played in the SCG.
Warner played his final ODI on 19th November, where Australia beat India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. In the press conference, he announced his retirement and confirmed he will not play the format for a minimum of 18 months. He said he would be ready to play in the 2025 Champions Trophy if the team needs him.
I'm definitely retiring from one-day cricket as well. That was something that I had said through the World Cup, get through that, and winning it in India, I think that's a massive achievement. So I'll make that decision today, to retire from those forms, which does allow me to go and play some other leagues around the world and sort of get the one-day team moving forward a little bit.David Warner to the press
He added:
I know there's a Champions Trophy coming up. If I'm playing decent cricket in two years' time and I'm around and they need someone, I'm going to be available.
Warner retired from the format with 6932 runs in 159 innings, scoring 22 centuries. After being identified as a T20I specialist, the 37-year-old has proven himself in all three formats. His greatest achievement in the format is winning the ICC ODI World Cup twice, once in 2015 and once in 2023.
