South African opener Quinton de Kock is playing in his last ODI World Cup of his career and he started his run in the tournament with a bang. He slammed his maiden century against Sri Lanka on Saturday (October 8) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka chose to field first and had a bright start with the ball when Dilshan Madushanka gave the first breakthrough in the second over. He dismissed the Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma for eight runs.

However, the Lankan bowlers had no luck against de Kock who was unshakeable for a long time. Thanks to his 84-ball 100, the Proteas got the excellent start they needed to post a huge target.

De Kock’s knock also included 12 boundaries and three sixes and he batted at a strike rate of 119.05. Before he could do further damage, Matheesha Pathirana got rid of with with the help of Dhananjaya de Silva’s catch.

Quinton de Kock even surpassed the legendary Jacques Kallis by smashing his 18th ODI century. This made him the player with the fourth-most tons in ODIs for South Africa. De Kock slammed his fifth ODI ton against Sri Lanka, and the hundred was also his fifth one on Indian soil.

Quinton de Kock stitched a 204-run stand with Rassie van der Dussen. Van der Dussen also smacked his century before he was sent to the dugout by Dunith Wellalage. The Proteas added 108 runs off 110 balls, and after Aiden Markam’s fastest World Cup hundred, South Africa ended up posting the highest total in the ODI World Cup when they reached 428/5.
