Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Jos Buttler, who had a terrific season last year, couldn’t emulate that form in the present Indian Premier League (IPL) year. The start to the season wasn’t that bad as he scored a couple of half-centuries but as the cash-rich league progressed, the Englishman struggled.

On Friday (May 19), when Pink Jersey locked horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamshala, Buttler got out for a duck off Kagiso Rabada’s delivery. After his dismissal, he scripted an unwanted record of registering five ducks in a season, the most by a batsman. The bizarre thing is it was his third successive duck. Last year’s Orange Cap holder is certainly struggling with terrible form.

Buttler, in a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, was just five runs away from equalling Chris Gayle’s all-time record of most IPL tons. But after that match, he went on to register three ducks, against Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and his third against PBKS.

Buttler, in the previous seasons, from 2016 and 2022, scored just a single duck before his unbelievable five ducks. Despite the ducks, he has managed 392 runs in 14 matches.

Last year, England’s white-ball skipper amassed 863 runs (including four centuries), the second highest runs scored in a single after Virat Kohli’s 973 runs, which is scored in 2016. Buttler’s blazing form was one of the reasons behind RR’s reaching the finals of the IPL season since their maiden trophy-winning season in 2008.

Meanwhile, RR, in that match against PBKS, won by four wickets to keep their playoffs alive. Two half-centuries, from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal, and Shimron Hetmyer‘s innings helped the Sanju Samson-led side drive past the 188-run target.
